Phone Avoid calling abroad from your hotel room unless you use a prepaid card, as rates are usually prohibitive. Local and national calls – American phone numbers have 10 digits: the first three are the area code, followed by the seven-digit number of the correspondent. For local calls (same area code), only dial the last seven digits. To call a different area (different area code), dial 1 + area code + phone number. Calling abroad from the United States – For the UK: 011 + 44 + your correspondent’s number (without the initial 0). For Australia (+61), Ireland (+353), Canada (1), New Zealand (+64). Calling the USA from abroad – 00 + 1 + 3-digit area code + 7-digit number of the correspondent. Prepaid phone cards Prepaid phone cards can be purchased from grocery stores, supermarkets, bus stations, gas stations, post offices, and newsstands. Expect to pay $5-20 for international call cards. Dial the toll-free number (1–800), the 16-digit code provided with the card, then the number of your correspondent. You will then be told how many minutes you have. Cell phones For your cell phone to work, it must be 4G and VoLTE-compatible. You can check its compatibility on the Internet. Before you travel, contact your operator to find out its US call rates. Some include the United States in their packages at no extra cost. If you want to invest in an American SIM card, insert it in your phone then use prepaid cards to top it up. All operators offer SIM cards to buy, available at grocery stores, drugstores, and cell phone stores. w You can also make calls via Internet applications such as WhatsApp, Skype, Delivery takes around 7 days to Canada, and 12 days to Europe, Australia, and New Zealand. Stamps are sold in post offices, some large supermarkets, and sometimes in drugstores and grocery stores. Reckon on $1.55 for sending a postcard or letter weighing less than 28 g.
