EXPLORE DETROIT
EASTERN MARKET
Eastern Market Murals Tour With the arrival of the Murals in the Market festival in 2015, Eastern Market has become the epicenter of street art in the city. Discovering these painted frescoes is like going on a treasure hunt. You'll spot some easily ahead of you; others will pop up quite unexpectedly. Some are large, or even ginormous, while others are much smaller, some radiant, others still rather quaint... Here’s a short selection of the murals you shouldn't miss. Music in Me by Richard Wilson, 2018 (1421 Gratiot Ave) . A magnificent fresco in tribute to the glory of Motown. A jazz aficionado, the London-born artist depicts a girl (her earring in the form of a “D” for Detroit) picking a record from vinyl with titles inspired by the Motown sound. Man in the City by John Sauvé, 2008 (2489 Russell St). It’s not a painting, but it’s no less a work of art for all that! Raise your eyes and look into the upper left corner of the Rocky’s store. This strange man in a hat, cut out of an orange metal plate, is the work of John Sauvé, a Detroit native. The artist, a fervent advocate of art education, imagined this figure, which pops up all over the city. His goal is to transform the horizon and attract the gaze of passers-by, a fun way to rediscover familiar places! There are now around forty such figures on the roofs of Detroit. Eminem & D12 by Michael Vasquez & Jose Felix Perez, 2017 (2701 Rivard St). Detroit’s most famous White rapper! You’ll have no trouble recognizing Eminem, taking a break with his 1990s hip-hop group, the D12. The colors chosen by the Miami artists are striking, and the meticulous brush strokes will undoubtedly make you want to take a selfie alongside them! Untitled by Camilo Pardo, 2017 (1551 Alfred St). Born in New York, the young man has a long-standing passion for cars. His fascination led him to becoming a renowned Ford designer. One of the reasons for this was the 2005 re-working of the Ford GT. An artist to the core, here he offers us his vision of the 1967 Fastback Mustang. Black List by Sydney G. James, 2016 (2630 Orleans St). Prolific local artist Sydney G. James, strongly dedicated to the feminist cause and the Black Lives Matter movement, has produced over a dozen major works in the city. This one is starting to fade, but its message is as powerful as ever: nothing in the United States is there to protect young Black women. Untitled by Miss Van, 2015 (1501 Division St). This well-hidden little gem is the work of French artist Miss Van, one of the first women to establish a reputation in street art. Far off from fading, she shows us a muse of a different age: beautiful and sensual. T ace.detroitmi.gov/mural-map ( murals map posted online by the city). T Under the Banner of Art, p. 148 .
